How the principles of Growth Mindset, Positive Psychology and Mindfulness can support our Tweens and Teens mental health and future happiness.

Growth Mindset

Do you ever hear your kids say “I’m stupid”or “I’m good at Maths but can’t do English”? When faced with challenges do they give up before they try? Are they scared of failure?

Believing you have a certain amount of intelligence or ability for something is  called a FIXED MINDSET.

The problem with having a fixed mindset is that when faced with a challenge or something that is harder to achieve than you thought it would be,  you decide that you just weren’t as good or as talented as you had first thought.

Rather than put in the extra effort required to achieve, your confidence goes and you give up easily. Your self esteem takes a hit, you start to avoid challenges and can have all sorts of negative self talk going on in your head about being a failure. And what does failure mean – you are not smart enough or talented enough.

Having a GROWTH MINDSET – The understanding that you can develop your abilities and intelligence – gives you the belief that you can get smarter and that effort makes you stronger.Read more here

Positive Psychology

The Science of Happiness

Positive Psychology is the scientific study of what makes life most worth living. It is a scientific approach to studying human thoughts, feelings, and behaviour, with a focus on strengths instead of weakness, what goes right in the world, what causes people to be happy, and building on the good in life instead of just repairing the bad.

Self perception really starts to kick in around the age of 7 or 8 and this is when negative thoughts and patterns in the brain start to develop. Having strong self-belief and postive perceptions is key to ensuring a happy healthy mind in the future.

Negative forces are three times more powerful than positive ones, so it actually takes work to develop strong positive neural pathways in the brain. Read more here

Mindfulness

You would think that over the years with incredible inventions such as the internet, overall better living standards, more access to money and more things to buy, people would have grown much happier and more satisfied with their lives.
In fact, the opposite seems to be true, life has got so busy, so noisy, and so full of things, that people are losing themselves in their possessions, constantly craving more and more, and so caught up in the fast moving, ever changing world, they are actually losing sight of what makes them truly happy and are not only becoming dissatisfied with their lives, in many cases they are burning out altogether.

We all want to be happy right? We all want to be successful in life, we all want to have lovely things. But unless you take the time to appreciate all that is around you, all the money, success, and possessions in the world just won’t make you happy.

Keeping healthy and in mind and body and filling your soul with all the things you love to do and that keep you fulfilled, will allow you to put all the knowledge you have gained throughout your journal into practise and let you experience all the joys the world has to offer.

Being able to clear your mind, live in the moment, slow down a bit and appreciate all the great things around you is imperative if you truly want to lead a great big positive life. Read more here

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is My Great Big Positive Life "Superstar Edition?

Hi there,

My name is Lorna Park and I am the author of My Great Big Positive Life Journal – Superstar Edition for Tweens and Teens.

During puberty the brain changes and grows more than any other time (apart from when we are babies) and it is during this time that patterns (positive or negative) are wired into the brain hard and fast.

Our mental wellbeing effects everything, from our ability to be successful, our relationships with others to our physical health. It distresses me to constantly be reading about the fact that our kids are growing up more stressed out and anxious than ever before, with little resilience and unable to cope with the challenges of life.

New research within the world of Neuroscience and the development of the Science of Positive Psychology in particular, over the past 20 years or so, has changed the landscape in terms of previous held beliefs.

Practices that 20 years ago would have been seen as a bit woo woo are now becoming mainstream and backed up with scientific evidence that they work.

Using this scientifically based evidence I wanted to help our kids understand that they are in control of their own happiness, whilst giving them the strategies and skills they need in order to stop the negative patterns developing in the first place.

So I put together the principles of Growth Mindset, Positive Psychology (the science of happiness) & Mindfulness in a fun and friendly way to help them create their own positive daily habits which will support their mental health and wellbeing in the future.

My Great Big Positive Life Journal is way more than your average journal or activity book. It is heavily knowledge based so the reader can fully understand how their brain works and gives them all the strategies and skill they will need to create their own positive daily habits whilst encouraging them to journal their thoughts and feelings so they can connect to them on a deeper level.
